"The Dot"

The story, "The Dot" has a huge lesson behind it. In the story the teacher encourages and praises the  dot that a student created. After the teacher hangs up the students art work in the classroom it make the student really confident in herself. The student then starts creating multiple versions of the same dot but in different colors and sizes. The student then becomes so confident in herself and the artwork that she has created that she then enters the school art show. She displays her artwork all over the ways of the art show. A little boy comes over and asks her how she she got started and she encourages the little boy that same way that her teacher did to her.

We created our own dots using coffee filters and multiple medias. The different medias that we used were crayons, oil pastels, markers, water color paints, and water color crayons. We were given the chance to create our dots using any of the medias listed above. We used this project to see what medias work well together and the medias that did not as well together. I had a lot of fun being able to see how crayon and oil pastels will repel the watercolor paints where as the water color crayons and markers would bleed together when painted over with the water color paints.

EXTENSION: I would give each student a coffee filter and some dot markers. I would then ask the students to create a dot with the coffee filter using many different color dot markers. I would then hang all the students dots up in the hallway so that all the students could see the work that each student did as well as their classmates did.
